GIS and Databases
Staff of Biebrza National Park (BNP) along with each scientist’s teams will work out in the first stage the detailed range of research which will be delivered to the computer scientist’s team whom will develop applications for the collecting field data. Simultaneously computer scientist’s team will prepared base maps for all teams. These works will consist of collecting data from all teams, and from the BNP Management Support System (MMS). The main Geographic Information System (GIS) software will be based on ESRI products such as ArcGIS Desktop and ArcPAD which is fully compatible with BNP MSS.
The software ArcPAD connected with PocketPC and GPS will be use for collecting field work data and finding of places of historical research. Diurnal field works will be exported to the summary database equipped into special interfaces for error control, searching and analyses. The summary database of every team will be developed in the generally accessible MS Access software which is fully compatible with BNP MSS. The application of modern technologies for collecting and data storage will assure the quality of these data, through the elimination of errors, which arise as result of rewriting data from manual field notes. In the next stage, collected by each team’s information, will supply BNP MSS. Besides this, prepared software for collecting field data will provide BNP staff - so they would be able to continue monitoring even after the end of the project. The computer scientists will be responsible for to the realization and the actualization of the internet page (see 4.3) developed for disseminating results works of the project. Other tasks of this page will be distribution of raw field data through the special system about data information which will be developed in MetaBase. This the system will be responsible for searching, browsing or downloading measuring data - collected in the project. This system will be installed on the BNP server, what improve his data updating after the end of the project.
During project realization 10 workers of the Park will become trained in the service of all software created for the project, so to be able to support scientist’s teams and after the end of the project efficiently to use these tools in the normal working day.
